Design & Estimation Engineer - Commission and Installation
We are seeking a Design and Estimation Engineer who analyses project specifications, estimates all associated costs, and prepares proposals for clients, including the expenses related to installation and commissioning. This role requires a strong understanding of automation technologies, market trends, and project management to ensure profitable and competitive bids.
Responsibilities:
An automation costing and estimation engineer's responsibilities involve managing the financial planning of automation projects from start to finish.
Analyse project specifications:
Review engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and client needs to determine the scope and requirements of the automation project.
Develop cost estimates and proposals:
Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, and other related expenses.
Calculate installation costs:
Factor in the time and labor required for the physical installation of automation equipment, including electrical panels, hardware, and control systems.
Estimate commissioning expenses:
Account for the costs of testing, calibration, and configuring the automation system to ensure it functions as specified. This may also include costs for system integration and performance tuning.
Coordinate with suppliers:
Collaborate with vendors to obtain accurate and competitive pricing for all required components and hardware.
Assess risk and opportunities:
Identify potential cost-saving opportunities and risk factors that could impact the project budget or timeline.
Manage project budget:
Monitor project costs throughout the implementation phase to prevent budget overruns and ensure profitability.
Present to stakeholders:
Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations to communicate cost estimates, budgets, and project progress to clients and management.
Key cost categories for automation projectsWhen estimating an automation project, an engineer will break down the costs into several major categories.
Hardware and equipment:
The cost of physical components, including robotics, sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and other control system hardware.
Software:
Expenses related to software licensing, system integration, custom programming, and data management platforms.
Engineering and design:
Costs for the design phase, including creating layouts, system architecture diagrams, and control logic.
Labor:
The wages and related costs for engineers, programmers, technicians, and other personnel involved in the project's design, installation, and commissioning.
Installation:
Expenses for physically installing the equipment, including mechanical setup, electrical wiring, and infrastructure modifications.
Commissioning:
Costs associated with testing, debugging, and starting up the automated system to verify that it meets all performance requirements. Commissioning costs are often estimated at 2-5% of the total project budget.
Integration:
The cost of connecting the new automation system with existing legacy systems, a factor that can add significant cost depending on complexity.
Training:
The expense of training employees who will operate, maintain, and support the new automated system.
Contingency:
A buffer added to the estimate to cover unexpected issues or risks during the project.
Skills and qualificationsThe role requires a combination of technical knowledge, analytical abilities, and strong communication skills.
Educational background:
A bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, or Industrial) is typically required.
Technical expertise:
Knowledge of automation technologies, control systems (PLC/DCS), and electrical components is essential.
Cost estimation methods:
Proficiency in various estimation techniques, such as bottom-up, analogous, and parametric estimating.
Analytical skills:
Strong ability to analyze project requirements, identify potential risks, and calculate complex costs.
Software proficiency:
Experience with relevant software, including Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, and project management tools.
Communication:
Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills to interact with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
