Roles and Responsibilities of a SolidWorks Design Engineer



A

SolidWorks Design Engineer

is responsible for creating, modifying, and optimizing 3D models and technical drawings for mechanical and industrial designs using

SolidWorks

software.

Key Responsibilities1. 3D Modeling & CAD Design



Develop

3D models

of mechanical components, sheet metal parts, and assemblies using

SolidWorks

. Create

detailed 2D technical drawings

for manufacturing. Apply

GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)

to designs for precise fabrication.

2. Sheet Metal & Fabrication Design



Design

sheet metal enclosures, brackets, and fabricated structures

using the

Sheet Metal module

in SolidWorks. Optimize bend allowances, K-factor, and bend deductions for CNC laser cutting and bending. Generate

flat patterns

for CNC machines.

3. Product Development & Prototyping



Develop

new product designs

from concept to final production. Perform

design modifications

based on customer requirements or manufacturing feedback. Support

rapid prototyping

using 3D printing or CNC machining.

4. Assembly & BOM Creation



Create

assembly models

and define

part relationships

(mates, constraints, etc.). Generate

BOMs (Bill of Materials)

with correct material and part specifications. Identify and resolve

assembly interferences

using SolidWorks

Assembly Analysis

.

5. Design Analysis & Simulation



Conduct

FEA (Finite Element Analysis)

for structural strength and durability. Perform

motion analysis

for moving parts. Optimize weight and material usage while maintaining strength.

6. Collaboration with Manufacturing & Vendors



Work with

production, CNC programmers, and vendors

to ensure manufacturability. Provide

DFM (Design for Manufacturing)

and

DFS (Design for Serviceability)

recommendations. Coordinate with

suppliers

for material selection and tolerances.

7. Documentation & Revision Control



Maintain

design revisions and version control

in PLM/PDM systems. Prepare

technical documentation

such as assembly instructions and specifications. Update design records as per ECN (Engineering Change Notices).

8. Compliance & Quality Standards



Ensure designs meet

ISO, ASME, or company-specific standards

. Conduct

tolerance stack-up analysis

for precision assemblies. Implement

safety and ergonomic considerations

in product designs.
