Job Purpose:
The Lead - Mechanical Drive Train is tasked with designing, optimizing, and validating key drive train components, including gearboxes, main shafts, and bearings, using advanced engineering software like SolidWorks, ANSYS, and MATLAB. This role involves conducting detailed analyses, such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), to assess structural integrity and thermal performance under operational loads. The Lead Engineer coordinates prototype testing, engages in site troubleshooting to resolve performance issues, and collaborates closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and aligned with quality standards. Additionally, this role supports the Head of Mechanical Drive Train in implementing continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining compliance with relevant technical and corporate governance standards. Mentorship and technical leadership are key components, as the Lead Engineer guides junior team members and fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation.
Responsibilities:
Component Design and Optimization

  • Lead the design and optimization of drive train components such as main shafts, bearings, gearboxes, couplings, and spring discs using advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo).
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to evaluate structural integrity, fatigue life, and thermal performance under varying operational loads.
Detailed Engineering and Documentation
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings, BOMs (Bill of Materials), and technical specifications for drive train components, ensuring accuracy and compliance with design standards.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of design changes, test results, and technical evaluations, particularly for critical components like the main shaft and gearboxes.
Prototype Testing and Analysis
  • Coordinate the testing of prototypes, including endurance tests, noise, vibration analysis, and load tests, with a focus on high-stress areas such as gearboxes and main bearings.
  • Analyze test data to validate designs and identify potential areas for optimization, working closely with the Head of Mechanical Drive Train for approval of design iterations.
Technical Problem Solving and Site Troubleshooting
  • Lead site troubleshooting efforts for mechanical drive train issues, conducting root cause analysis of component failures, including main shafts, bearings, and gearboxes.
  • Engage in hands-on diagnostics during site visits, utilizing advanced analytical techniques to resolve operational problems and improve system reliability.
Manufacturing Support and Process Development
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure the design manufacturability of drive train components, providing input on machining tolerances, material selection, and assembly processes.
  • Support the development of manufacturing process flows and work instructions, optimizing for efficiency, cost, and quality, particularly in the assembly of complex components like gearboxes.
Corporate Governance and Internal Controls
  • Implement internal control measures to ensure engineering operations adhere to governance standards and compliance requirements.
  • Promote transparency in engineering processes and decision-making, aligning with organizational policies on ethics and integrity.
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure that all drive train components meet stringent quality assurance standards, conducting thorough inspections and audits during the production process.
  • Support compliance with industry standards, including ISO 9001 and IEC, ensuring all products are certified and ready for market deployment.
Team Mentorship and Development
  • Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and support in their professional development.
  • Lead technical reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions within the team to promote best practices and technical skill enhancement.
Key Stakeholders - Internal:
  • Mechanical Drive Train Engineer
  • Head - Mechanical Engineering
  • Manufacturing Teams
  • QA Teams
Key Stakeholders - External:
  • Maintenance Service Providers
Qualifications:
Educational Background:
  • BE in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Work Experience:
  • 8+ years designing and testing drive train components with emphasis on structural integrity, thermal performance, and FEA/CFD analysis.
Industry Knowledge:
  • Skilled in CAD, FEA, troubleshooting complex mechanical systems, and enhancing component durability through innovative materials and designs.
