The Dress Cutting Master is responsible for interpreting garment designs, taking accurate measurements, drafting patterns, and cutting fabric according to required styles and specifications. The role requires a high level of skill in pattern making, fabric handling, and garment construction, with a focus on precision, efficiency, and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Pattern Making & Draping:
Interpret sketches, photos, or specifications to create custom patterns.
Draft basic blocks and adjust them for custom sizes and styles.
Modify existing patterns for new designs or customer requirements.
Fabric Cutting:
Cut fabrics accurately based on the patterns, ensuring minimal waste.
Identify fabric grain, stretch, and nap direction before cutting.
Layer and mark multiple pieces for bulk cutting when required.
Measurements & Fittings:
Take accurate body measurements of clients or models.
Conduct test fits (using muslin/toile) and make pattern adjustments as needed.
Collaborate with tailors to ensure proper garment fitting.
Quality Control:
Inspect cut pieces for defects or inconsistencies.
Ensure all cut components match the pattern and design.
Maintain high standards of accuracy and quality.
Team Coordination:
Work closely with designers, tailors, and production team.
Guide junior staff or apprentices on proper cutting techniques.
Maintain workflow to meet deadlines and production schedules.
Required Skills and Competencies:
Expertise in garment cutting, pattern drafting (manual and/or CAD), and draping.
Strong understanding of garment construction and tailoring.
Familiarity with different fabric types and their handling techniques.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, sketches, or specs.
Excellent attention to detail and craftsmanship.
Good organizational and time-management skills.
Qualifications:
Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Dress Cutting Master, Pattern Master, or similar role in a tailoring or garment manufacturing environment.
Formal training in fashion design, pattern making, or tailoring is preferred but not mandatory for experienced professionals.
Knowledge of garment manufacturing processes and industry trends is an advantage.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods while cutting.
Good eyesight and hand-eye coordination.
Manual dexterity and ability to use cutting tools and measuring equipment accurately.
Work Environment:
Workshop or tailoring studio.
May involve working with industrial cutting equipment and sharp tools.
Occasional overtime may be required to meet production deadlines.
