Job Description

The Cardiothoracic Staff Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgeries, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. The nurse ensures patient safety, assists physicians and surgeons, and delivers high-quality critical care in accordance with hospital policies and clinical standards.

Patient Care



Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients before and after cardiothoracic surgery. Monitor and assess vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, and hemodynamic status. Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and pain management as prescribed. Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures and support during recovery. Manage chest drains, ventilators, central lines, arterial lines, and other critical equipment. Educate patients and families on post-surgical care, lifestyle modifications, and recovery process.

Clinical Duties



Assist surgeons and anesthesiologists during cardiothoracic procedures. Maintain sterile techniques and infection control practices in the operating and recovery areas. Provide emergency interventions in case of cardiac arrest or respiratory failure (CPR, ACLS). Document patient assessments, nursing interventions, and progress notes accurately.

Teamwork & Coordination



Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, intensivists, anesthetists, and physiotherapists. Participate in daily ward rounds and contribute to patient care planning. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Quality & Safety



Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing protocols, and clinical guidelines. Maintain accurate records and reports for audits and quality assurance. Adhere to infection prevention and patient safety standards.

Qualifications & Skills



B.Sc. / GNM in Nursing with valid Nursing Council Registration. Specialized training or experience in cardiothoracic / cardiac ICU nursing preferred. Strong knowledge of cardiac monitoring, ventilator management, and emergency care. Excellent clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Ability to remain calm and efficient in high-stress situations. Compassion, patience, and strong communication skills.
