The CSSD Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembling, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring strict adherence to infection prevention standards, especially critical in the maternity and labor & delivery areas.
Receive used instruments from Labor Room, OT, NICU, and other maternity-related units.
Manually and mechanically clean surgical instruments and equipment.
Follow proper protocols for soaking, brushing, and rinsing instruments.
2. Sterilization & Disinfection:
Operate autoclaves, ETO sterilizers, and other sterilizing equipment as per protocol.
Ensure appropriate sterilization methods based on instrument/material type.
Monitor and maintain sterility indicators and records.
3. Instrument Assembly & Packaging:
Inspect instruments for cleanliness, damage, or malfunction.
Assemble instrument sets based on OT and maternity procedure requirements.
Pack and label trays and sets with proper indicators and expiry dates.
4. Distribution & Inventory:
Supply sterile instruments and packs to OT, Labor Room, NICU, and other units as requested.
Maintain accurate records of instruments sent/received.
Assist in maintaining inventory of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
5. Infection Control & Safety:
Adhere to hospital infection control and biomedical waste protocols.
Wear appropriate PPE and follow universal precautions.
Report any incidents of contamination or equipment failure immediately.
Qualifications:
Diploma or Certification in CSSD Technician Course or Sterile Services.
Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a hospital CSSD; experience in maternity/labor OT preferred.
Basic knowledge of sterilization methods, infection control, and surgical instrumentation.
Skills & Competencies:
Attention to detail and cleanliness.
Understanding of infection prevention and control practices.
Ability to handle instruments with care and precision.
Familiarity with autoclaves, ETO, ultrasonic cleaners, and related equipment.
Good organizational and documentation skills.
Working Conditions:
Shift-based work, including weekends and holidays.
Exposure to biological materials and high-temperature equipment.
Requires wearing PPE and standing for long periods.
