Job Summary:
The CSSD Technician is responsible for the sterilization, assembly, and distribution of surgical and medical instruments and equipment to ensure optimal infection control. They work in the CSSD to clean, disinfect, and sterilize reusable medical devices, helping maintain a safe and sterile environment for patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Decontamination:
Disassemble medical equipment and devices, remove contaminants, and perform initial cleaning.
Use manual and automated cleaning processes, including ultrasonic cleaners and washers, to thoroughly decontaminate instruments.
Adhere to safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure proper disposal of biohazardous waste.
Sterilization:
Operate sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, gas sterilizers, and low-temperature sterilizers following established guidelines.
Monitor sterilization cycles and verify the effectiveness of each cycle using biological and chemical indicators.
Document and report sterilization process parameters according to hospital policies.
Assembly and Packaging:
Inspect, assemble, and package surgical instruments and medical devices according to procedure standards.
Ensure that instrument sets are complete, functional, and free from damage before sterilization.
Label and date all sterilized packages, ensuring accurate tracking and storage.
Distribution and Inventory Management:
Ensure timely and efficient delivery of sterile supplies to various departments, including operating rooms and outpatient areas.
Maintain accurate records of sterilized items, inventory levels, and track supplies to avoid shortages or overstock.
Assist with inventory management by identifying items for reordering and restocking supplies as needed.
Compliance and Safety:
Adhere to hospital infection control and sterilization standards, including those set by OSHA, AAMI, and JCI.
Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of CSSD equipment and report issues to supervisors.
Participate in department audits and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Training and Collaboration:
Collaborate with other healthcare teams to understand their equipment needs and provide guidance on sterilization practices.
Stay updated on best practices in sterile processing and participate in ongoing training and certifications.
