The Cosmetic Chemist is responsible for researching, formulating, developing, and testing new cosmetic and personal care products. This role involves creating stable and effective formulations that meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards while aligning with brand goals and market trends. The ideal candidate has a strong background in chemistry, formulation science, and product innovation within the cosmetics or personal care industry.
Key Responsibilities
Formulation Development:
Develop and optimize formulations for skincare, haircare, color cosmetics, body care, and other personal care products.
Modify existing formulas to improve performance, sensory properties, or cost efficiency.
Research & Innovation:
Research new raw materials, technologies, and trends to support innovation.
Collaborate with marketing teams to translate concepts into viable product formulations.
Testing & Evaluation:
Conduct stability, compatibility, and performance testing on formulations.
Evaluate sensory characteristics (texture, fragrance, color, feel) and ensure product consistency.
Documentation & Compliance:
Prepare and maintain detailed formulation records, batch sheets, and technical documentation.
Ensure formulations comply with relevant cosmetic regulations (e.g., FDA, EU, Health Canada).
Collaboration:
Work cross-functionally with regulatory, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams to scale up products from lab to production.
Support troubleshooting during pilot and production batches.
Quality & Safety:
Ensure all developed products meet safety, efficacy, and quality standards.
Stay current with global cosmetic regulations and ingredient restrictions.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in cosmetic or personal care product formulation.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of emulsion chemistry, surfactants, preservatives, and active ingredients.
Proficient in using lab equipment (viscometer, pH meter, homogenizer, etc.).
Knowledge of formulation software and regulatory databases is a plus.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Creativity and passion for beauty and innovation.
Preferred Experience:
Experience with natural/clean beauty formulations or sustainable ingredients.
Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO standards.
Prior work with color matching and fragrance integration.
