Position Overview:
The Continental & Chinese Commis Chef supports the senior chefs in preparing, cooking, and presenting dishes within the Continental and Chinese cuisine sections. This role is ideal for someone with basic culinary skills who is eager to learn and grow in a professional kitchen. The candidate should be efficient, disciplined, and passionate about food preparation.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation & Cooking
Assist in the preparation and cooking of Continental and Chinese dishes under the guidance of senior chefs.
Prepare ingredients--chopping, marinating, cutting, portioning, and seasoning.
Cook basic menu items and support service during busy shifts.
Follow standard recipes, portion sizes, and presentation guidelines.
Maintain quality, taste consistency, and proper food texture.
Kitchen Operations
Ensure workstation is organized, clean, and prepped for cooking.
Properly store ingredients and maintain fridge and freezer organization.
Follow food safety and hygiene standards as per kitchen SOPs.
Assist in inventory management by reporting shortages and spoilage.
Support with receiving and storing weekly supplies.
Teamwork & Communication
Work closely with Demi Chef, Chef de Partie, and other team members.
Communicate effectively during service for smooth kitchen operations.
Cooperate during menu planning, special events, and new dish trials.
Requirements:
Skills & Experience
1-3 years of experience in Continental or Chinese cuisine (freshers with training considered for Commis III).
Knowledge of cooking techniques, sauces, and basic culinary principles.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards.
Certifications (Optional)
Culinary diploma or accredited kitchen training (preferred).
Food handling / HACCP certification (added advantage).
Personal Attributes
Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Positive attitude, reliability, and discipline.
Ability to handle pressure during peak hours.
Working Conditions
Busy kitchen environment.
Early morning, late evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required.
