A Commis 1 Chef is a skilled junior cook responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting high-quality dishes in accordance with the kitchen's standards. This role supports senior chefs, ensures kitchen operations run smoothly, and maintains high food safety and hygiene practices.
Key Responsibilities1. Food Preparation & Cooking
Prepare and cook dishes according to standard recipes, portion sizes, and quality guidelines.
Assist in preparing ingredients, mise en place, sauces, stocks, and garnishes.
Ensure all food items are cooked and presented to the highest quality.
2. Kitchen Operations
Support Chef de Partie in day-to-day operations of the assigned section (e.g., hot kitchen, cold kitchen, grill, pastry).
Work efficiently to maintain workflow during busy service periods.
Monitor stock levels and communicate needs to senior chefs.
3. Food Safety & Hygiene
Follow all food handling, sanitation, and hygiene protocols (HACCP or equivalent).
Maintain cleanliness of workstations, equipment, and storage areas.
Ensure proper labeling, storage, and rotation of ingredients (FIFO).
4. Teamwork & Coordination
Collaborate closely with chefs and other kitchen staff to ensure timely service.
Assist and guide Commis II / Commis III when needed.
Communicate effectively about any issues, shortages, or delays.
5. Quality Control
Check the freshness and quality of ingredients before use.
Ensure dishes meet the restaurant's presentation and taste standards.
Suggest improvements to dishes or processes when appropriate.
Qualifications
Diploma or certification in Culinary Arts or related field.
Minimum 1-2 years' experience in a professional kitchen (preferred).
Knowledge of cooking techniques, ingredients, and kitchen equipment.
Strong knife skills and attention to detail.

Ability to follow instructions and adapt to fast-paced environments.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for long periods.
