CNC Programmer - JDE & Drilling ShopRole Summary

A CNC Programmer in a drilling-focused manufacturing environment is responsible for creating, optimizing, and maintaining CNC programs used in drilling operations. This role typically integrates with

JD Edwards (JDE)

ERP systems to manage routings, work orders, tooling, and production data. The programmer ensures machining processes are accurate, efficient, and aligned with shop capabilities and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, edit, and optimize

CNC drilling programs

for mills or specialized drilling machines (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, etc.). Interpret

engineering drawings, GD&T, blueprints, and BOMs

to produce accurate toolpaths. Use

CAM software

(e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, GibbsCAM) to generate drilling toolpaths. Integrate CNC program data with

JDE

, including routing setup, operation sequences, tooling lists, and revision control. Select and validate

cutting tools, drill types, feed/speed parameters

, and fixturing for drilling tasks. Support shop floor personnel during program prove-outs and troubleshooting. Improve drilling cycle times, reduce tool wear, and enhance machining quality. Maintain program libraries, revision history, and documentation tied to JDE work orders. Ensure all drilling processes meet

quality and safety standards

. Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve machining issues.

Required Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills

Strong proficiency in

CNC programming

for drilling applications. Experience using

CAM software

to generate drill patterns, canned cycles, helical drilling, pecking cycles, etc. Knowledge of

G-code/M-code

, drilling cycles (G81, G83, G73, etc.). Experience with

JDE (JD Edwards)

for routing, work order management, and manufacturing data entry. Understanding of

machining fundamentals

, speeds/feeds, tool geometry, and material properties. Ability to analyze and optimize setups for

increased throughput and tool life

. Familiarity with

CMM reports, quality checks

, and GD&T tolerances.

Soft Skills

Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis. Clear communication with machinists and supervisors. Attention to detail; ability to manage multiple revisions and work orders. Continuous improvement mindset (lean, Kaizen, or similar beneficial).
