The CNC VMC Operator is responsible for operating Vertical Machining Centers to produce high-precision engineering components.
The role focuses on machine operation, in-process inspection, maintaining quality standards, and supporting production targets for aerospace, medical, oil & gas, energy, and general engineering components.
The operator works under the guidance of Setters, Programmers, Supervisors, and Shift Incharges to ensure smooth, safe, and efficient machining.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Operation
Operate CNC VMC machines as per job instructions and setup provided by the Setter.
Load workpieces, run parts, and monitor machining operations.
Maintain cycle times and meet production output targets.
Ensure stable machine operation with minimal interruptions.
2. In-Process Inspection
Measure machined parts using:
Vernier Caliper
Micrometer
Height Gauge
Bore Gauge
Dial Indicator
Thread/plug gauges
Carry out first-piece and periodic inspection to maintain accuracy.
Report dimensional deviations or tool issues immediately.
3. Program & Machine Monitoring
Call and run programs (no offset editing unless approved).
Monitor tool wear, coolant levels, vibration, and unusual machine behavior.
Assist Setter during tool changes and fixture loading.
Keep the machine area clean and free from chips.
4. Job Handling & Process Discipline
Follow operation sheets, job cards, and routing instructions correctly.
Ensure proper clamping, work handling, and part identification.
Follow FIFO and traceability requirements.
Avoid damage to components, fixtures, tools, and accessories.
5. Safety & Housekeeping
Follow all safety protocols and wear mandatory PPE.
Maintain 5S in the machine area: cleanliness, organization, and discipline.
Handle tools, materials, and workpieces safely.
Participate in safety audits, drills, and training.
6. Documentation & Reporting
Record production achievements, rework/rejection, and tool changes.
Maintain logbooks and shift records.
Provide clear shift handover to next operator.
Update basic ERP/MIS entries if required.
Required Qualifications
Education
ITI (Machinist/Fitter) / Diploma in Mechanical or relevant trade.
Basic CNC operation training preferred.
Experience
1-4 years of experience operating CNC VMC machines.
Experience in aerospace, medical, or precision machining industries is an advantage.
Skills
Basic understanding of CNC operation on VMC machines.
Ability to read simple engineering drawings and understand tolerances.
Hands-on experience using inspection tools.
Good discipline, focus, and willingness to learn.
Basic understanding of feeds, speeds, and machining fundamentals.
