Roles and Responsibilities of a Classical Dance Teacher

1. Teaching & Instruction

Teach

classical dance forms

(e.g., Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Ballet, or other classical styles as applicable). Demonstrate correct

posture, movements, expressions (abhinaya), rhythm, and techniques

. Develop students'

coordination, flexibility, balance, and strength

. Train students in

theory

, including rhythm (tala), music, costumes, and cultural context. Adapt teaching methods to suit different

age groups and skill levels

.
2. Lesson Planning & Curriculum Development

Plan structured

lesson sequences

from basics to advanced levels. Design syllabi aligned with

certification boards, school curricula, or examination standards

. Prepare choreography for classes, assessments, and performances. Integrate

warm-ups, practice routines, and cooldowns

to prevent injury.
3. Student Development & Assessment

Monitor and evaluate students'

technical skills, expression, rhythm, and progress

. Provide

constructive feedback

and individualized guidance. Prepare students for

examinations, competitions, stage performances, and festivals

. Encourage discipline, confidence, stage presence, and artistic expression.
4. Classroom & Studio Management

Maintain a

safe and disciplined dance environment

. Ensure proper use and care of

dance floors, mirrors, costumes, and props

. Enforce punctuality, practice routines, and professional conduct. Follow health, safety, and injury-prevention guidelines.
5. Performance & Event Responsibilities

Choreograph and direct dance items for

school programs, cultural events, and annual functions

. Organize rehearsals and coordinate costumes, makeup, and music. Guide students on

stage etiquette and performance skills

. Collaborate with music teachers, accompanists, and event coordinators.
6. Cultural & Artistic Preservation

Promote awareness of the

history, tradition, and cultural significance

of classical dance. Uphold authenticity and ethical practice of the art form. Inspire respect for cultural heritage and artistic values.
7. Communication & Professional Responsibilities

Communicate progress and expectations with

parents and school management

. Maintain attendance, progress records, and assessment reports. Participate in

workshops, performances, and professional development

. Contribute to school cultural programs and extracurricular activities.
8. Student Wellbeing & Mentorship

Encourage self-discipline, confidence, and emotional expression. Support students' physical and mental wellbeing. Act as a

mentor and role model

in artistic and personal development.
