Job Description

A Chartered Accountant (CA) in a construction and sewage treatment plant (STP) company manages overall financial health, provides strategic financial guidance for projects, and ensures compliance with industry-specific regulations. The role requires specialized knowledge of project-based accounting, such as job costing and revenue recognition for long-term contracts. Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting and Analysis

: Prepare and analyze financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements), budgets, and forecasts. This includes generating comprehensive financial reports that track project performance and profitability.

Project Cost Management & Job Costing

: Collaborate with project managers to create detailed, cost-effective budgets for individual construction and STP projects. Meticulously track all project-related expenses (labor, materials, equipment, overhead) and compare them to the budgeted amounts, identifying variances and addressing cost overruns promptly.

Auditing and Compliance

: Conduct internal and external audits to ensure all financial activities comply with local, state, and federal laws, as well as industry-specific accounting standards (like GAAP or IFRS/Ind-AS).

Tax Planning and Management

: Manage all tax planning, preparation, and filing activities, including GST, TDS, and income tax returns, ensuring compliance with complex tax laws related to the construction sector.

Cash Flow Management

: Monitor cash inflows and outflows, forecast cash needs for current and future projects, and manage accounts payable and receivable to ensure sufficient liquidity and timely payments to subcontractors and suppliers.

Contract and Risk Management

: Review complex contracts and agreements from a financial perspective to ensure compliance with terms (e.g., lien waivers, holdback rules) and identify potential financial risks, working with project teams to mitigate them.

Process Improvement

: Implement and maintain effective accounting systems and internal controls, recommending improvements to financial operations and processes to enhance efficiency.

Stakeholder Collaboration

: Liaise with clients, vendors, internal project teams, and auditors, providing accurate financial information and advice to support informed decision-making.
Essential Skills and Qualifications

Qualification

: A certified Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification is a fundamental requirement.

Experience

: Prior experience in construction or project-based accounting is highly preferred due to the unique financial complexities of the industry.

Technical Skills

: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Sage) and advanced MS Excel skills for data analysis and reporting.

Soft Skills

: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills, along with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.

Industry Knowledge

: Deep understanding of construction cost accounting, including material and labor cost structures, revenue recognition practices (like the percentage-of-completion method), and the ability to track change orders.
