Job Description

What: Naval architects are basically engineers who deal with the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures like watercrafts, hydrofoils and oil drilling platforms. They do research, design development, design evaluation and stability calculations during all stages of the life of a marine vehicle. Preliminary design of the vessel, its detailed design, construction, trials, operation and maintenance, launching and dry-docking are the main activities involved. Ocean Engineers invent Oceanographic instruments and devices for use by Oceanographers. These instruments and devices are used to study about oceans and their impact on eco systems. Ocean Engineers study engineering sciences, and receive training in core study areas related to Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture. The starting salary of an ocean engineering graduate employed in a government sector enterprise such as ONGC and Bombay High may be about Rs. 50,000 to 75,000 per month. MNCs and reputed companies such as Reliance Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, and EXXON offer a starting salary of Rs. 125,000 to Rs. 250,000 per month. Salaries of professionals deputed to Gulf countries go up to about 10,000 to Rs. 12,000 dinars per month, plus perquisites. How: Land resources are getting scarce and oceans and water bodies would be the destination in future. Small countries like Singapore are expanding and creating artificial land and underwater structures. For a country like India which surrounded by water on three sides the potential in water structures and vehicles is huge. Who knows India will have commercial floating airport or floating city. All the structures and developments in the oceans is made possible by Naval architects and Ocean Engineers.
Naval Architect
: The course is a four-year B.E. or B.Tech degree programme that covers the aspects of ship design, ship construction, ship theory, ship maintenance, ship hydrodynamics, ship hydrostatics and ship structure. All the four years are interspersed with practical and hands-on training. The basic idea is to make the students employable from day one after passing out. Ocean Engineering: The eligibility criterion for undergraduate programme in ocean engineering is 10+2 with physics, chemistry and mathematics from any recognized board. In order to pursue post graduate programmes in ocean engineering candidates are required to qualify the Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering (GATE), CSIR NET. Where: Ocean industry is growing and still on the verge of growing more in the upcoming years. Study has shown the growth in the international trade. Advancement in engineering practices is being applied here as the techniques are getting improved which has increased the growth in this field. In India this technology is still new and it will increase not rapidly but slowly day by day. But this field has high potential to grow with the development of new technologies. The employment in this field has increased the standard of living as well. This field is becoming more popular between the engineers as it combines many other fields of engineering. Institutions:
