What: Airline pilots are highly trained, skilled professionals who are qualified to fly many kinds of aircraft and helicopters. If you have ever flown on a commercial airliner, you may have peered towards the flight deck and wondered in some capacity about the mysteries unfolding behind the closed door. For most, the image of an airline pilot seems larger than life. A role designated for a gifted and dedicated few. For others with family members in the aviation industry it may be viewed as just another way to earn big bucks. Fortunately, for those of us who are vertically inclined, the truth lies somewhere in between. The process involved in becoming an airline pilot is more “blue collar” than one might think. Although certain personality traits, and aptitudes will improve one’s chances of success; dedication, perseverance, and a lot of hard work will undoubtedly get the job done. Commercial Pilots get attractive remuneration and incentives. The starting monthly salary of a commercial pilot ranges from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 150,000 per month, depending on the airline and experience. The earning includes special benefits in form of contributory provident fund, gratuity and medical facilities. How: Before considering any institution one should always verify that the flying school is approved by the civil aviation authority in that country. Candidates must have passed class XII with physics and maths and be not less than 17 years of age to start Commercial Pilot Licence training. They should be medically fit class II status as certified by a DGCA empanelled doctor or medical establishment for issue of Student Pilot’s Licence prior to commencement of the flying training. Private Helicopter Pilot Licence training can commence after clearing class X and 161/2 years of age. University of Mumbai offers BSc Aviation through different colleges which offer CPL training. Where: Being a pilot requires a very high level of skill. It literally takes years to acquire the skills necessary to fly commercial jets.
