The Canteen Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the school canteen, ensuring nutritious, hygienic, and timely meals are provided to students, staff, and residential boarders. The role involves menu planning, inventory control, vendor management, staff supervision, and adherence to health, safety, and food quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:1. Daily Operations & Food Service
Supervise the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for students and staff.
Ensure timely food service in accordance with the school schedule.
Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and hygiene in the kitchen, dining area, and storage areas.
Monitor food quality, taste, and presentation on a daily basis.
2. Menu Planning & Nutrition
Prepare weekly and monthly menus in consultation with the Principal / Dietician / Health In-charge.
Ensure a balanced and nutritious diet suitable for different age groups.
Introduce variety while maintaining cost-effectiveness and minimizing food waste.
3. Inventory & Procurement
Maintain stock of raw materials, groceries, gas, and cleaning supplies.
Prepare daily/weekly indent lists and coordinate procurement with the purchase department or vendors.
Check the quality and quantity of all supplies received before acceptance.
Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure optimal stock levels.
4. Staff Management
Supervise kitchen and dining staff (cooks, helpers, cleaners, servers).
Assign daily duties and ensure discipline and hygiene among staff.
Organize staff training on food safety, hygiene, and courteous behavior.
Maintain attendance and performance records of canteen staff.
5. Hygiene, Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with FSSAI, health, and safety regulations.
Conduct regular inspections of kitchen equipment, utensils, and storage facilities.
Monitor waste disposal practices and promote eco-friendly practices.
Report maintenance issues or repairs to the concerned department.
6. Budgeting & Cost Control
Prepare and manage the canteen budget in coordination with the administration.
Track daily expenses and maintain records of food consumption and wastage.
Suggest cost-effective measures without compromising food quality.
7. Coordination & Reporting
Coordinate with hostel wardens, school nurse, and administration for special dietary requirements.
Plan and manage food arrangements for school events, functions, and visitors.
Submit daily/weekly reports on canteen operations, stock usage, and issues faced.
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management / Catering / Food & Nutrition or related field.
Minimum
3-5 years of experience
in institutional or residential canteen management (preferably in schools, colleges, or hostels).
Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene standards, and kitchen operations.
Skills & Competencies:
Excellent leadership and people management skills.
Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage budgets and control costs effectively.
Knowledge of nutrition, menu planning, and food storage practices.

Residential school campus with early morning and evening shifts.
The role may require the candidate to stay on campus for supervision and emergency requirements.
