The Boring Machine Operator is responsible for operating, setting up, and maintaining horizontal or vertical boring machines to perform precision machining operations on metal or non-metal workpieces. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Operation & Setup
Set up and operate horizontal/vertical boring machines according to job orders, blueprints, and engineering specifications.
Install and align tooling, fixtures, jigs, and workpieces.
Adjust machine controls to regulate speeds, feeds, and cutting depths.
Monitor machining operations to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
Must have solid knowledge of tool and drill grinding, including sharpening, reconditioning, and adjusting tool geometry to meet boring machine requirements. Able to maintain drill point angles, relief angles, and cutting edges to ensure precision machining
Must have strong knowledge of the mechanical and machining properties of cast iron, mild steel, and stainless steel. Should understand variations in hardness, tensile strength, and machinability. Ability to select appropriate cutting tools, feeds, speeds, coolant, and boring techniques based on material type.
Quality & Inspection
Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and measurement specifications.
Use precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify dimensions.
Inspect finished parts for defects and ensure conformance to tolerances.
Document inspection results and maintain quality records.
Maintenance & Safety
Perform routine machine maintenance such as lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs.
Report mechanical issues to maintenance teams promptly.
Follow all safety protocols and use PPE at all times.
Maintain a clean and organized work area following 5S standards.
Production & Documentation
Record production data, such as material usage, machine settings, and output.
Coordinate with supervisors and engineers to optimize machining processes.
Assist in troubleshooting machining problems to improve efficiency.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
High school diploma or technical certification in machining or related field.
Minimum 1-3 years of experience operating boring machines or similar CNC/manual machines (preferred).
Experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
Skills
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Proficiency with measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges).
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with machining materials (steel, alloys, cast iron, etc.).
Basic computer skills for data entry and machine interfaces.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 25-50 lbs.
Standing for extended periods.
Good hand-eye coordination.
