is responsible for supervising and performing all technical activities related to blood collection, testing, processing, storage, and issue. This role ensures that blood and its components are handled in compliance with national standards, safety protocols, and hospital policies to provide safe and effective transfusion services.
Key Responsibilities & Tasks
Perform blood grouping, cross-matching, antibody screening, and compatibility testing.
Handle collection, processing, separation, labeling, storage, and issue of blood and blood components (e.g., PRBC, platelets, FFP, cryoprecipitate).
Conduct tests for transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) as per standard protocols (e.g., HIV, HBV, HCV, Syphilis, Malaria).
Operate and maintain equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, blood storage cabinets, incubators, and cell separators.
Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality control measures.
Monitor inventory of blood and components, including expired or unused units.
Maintain accurate records of donor registrations, blood units collected, tested, and issued.
Ensure documentation complies with regulatory bodies (e.g., National Blood Transfusion Council, FDA, NABL/NABH, Drugs & Cosmetics Act).
Prepare daily, monthly, transfusion audit reports as required by the hospital or regulatory authorities.
Manage donor adverse reactions and ensure safety and comfort of donors during and after donation.
Promote voluntary blood donation and organize blood donation camps.
Implement and monitor quality control (QC) programs for reagents, kits, and blood products.
Participate in internal and external quality assurance schemes (EQAS).
Ensure biosafety, infection control, and waste management in the blood bank.
Qualification & Experience:
Diploma / B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT / BMLT).
5+ years of experience in a hospital-based blood bank or transfusion services.
Exposure to biohazards, blood, and sharp instruments safety protocols (with appropriate PPE and safety protocols).
Strong knowledge of transfusion medicine and blood bank protocols.
Familiarity with regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA, NBTC, NABL, NABH, NACO).
Ability to work under pressure, especially in emergency situations.
Leadership and team management skills.
Computer proficiency for lab information systems and documentation
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
