Biomedical Engineer (with Facility Interface Responsibilities)

Job Purpose

Ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of all medical equipment across the hospital -- from installation and commissioning to preventive and corrective maintenance -- while coordinating with the Facility Management team to ensure environmental, electrical, and utility systems meet the operational requirements of medical devices.

Key Responsibilities1. Equipment Commissioning & Acceptance

Supervise the installation, site testing, and acceptance of all new medical equipment (MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound, cath lab, dialysis, etc.).

Verify compliance with manufacturer requirements for power supply, grounding, HVAC, and medical gas systems before activation.

Build and maintain the hospital's asset register and integrate all equipment into the CMMS system.

Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure warranty, calibration, and documentation completeness.

2. Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

Develop and execute preventive maintenance plans (PPM) for all biomedical devices according to OEM standards.

Respond to equipment breakdowns promptly and maintain detailed intervention logs.

Track downtime, MTTR, and service quality, ensuring minimal interruption to patient care.

Ensure calibration schedules are adhered to and maintain traceability certificates.

3. Safety, Compliance & Quality

Enforce electrical and patient safety standards (IEC 60601, IEC 62353, HTM).

Participate in internal audits, risk assessments, and regulatory inspections.

Lead equipment-related incident investigations and corrective actions (CAPA).

Ensure biomedical waste handling and decontamination protocols are observed during maintenance.

4. Facility Interface & Coordination (Focused Facility Management Responsibilities)

Work closely with the Facility Management team to ensure that hospital infrastructure supports medical equipment needs (power supply, grounding, HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems).

Report and follow up on any utility deviations that may affect equipment performance (voltage fluctuation, cooling, humidity, etc.).

Verify environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, airflow) in imaging rooms, OTs, and ICUs in collaboration with facility engineers.

Support energy efficiency and safety programs (UPS/generator load monitoring, emergency power tests).

Participate in emergency response and facility shutdown coordination impacting biomedical systems.

Contribute technical input to renovation or expansion projects ensuring compliance with medical equipment design standards.

5. Documentation & Reporting

Maintain all service, calibration, and acceptance reports in the CMMS.

Generate monthly equipment uptime and maintenance KPI reports.

Track service contracts, warranties, and spare parts inventory.

Ensure all biomedical-related SOPs and work instructions are up to date.

6. User Support & Training

Conduct training sessions for clinical and nursing staff on safe operation and basic troubleshooting of devices.

Issue quick user guides and conduct refresher programs as required.

Support the Quality and Nursing Education departments in competency checks and refresher sessions.

Equipment Uptime (Critical Devices): ₹ 98% PPM Completion (On-Time): ₹ 95% Mean Time to Repair (MTTR): ₹ 4-8 hours Calibration Compliance: 100% Audit/Regulatory Compliance: ₹ 90% Facility-Related Technical Issues Impacting Equipment: < 2 incidents/month
Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical, or Electromechanical Engineering. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in hospital biomedical engineering operations. Strong understanding of diagnostic and life-support equipment. Exposure to facility systems (power, HVAC, water treatment, medical gases) and ability to liaise effectively with facility engineers. Experience with CMMS and Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of HTM, IEC, and ISO 9001/15189/13485 standards preferred. OEM training or vendor certification is an added advantage.
