Job Description

A billing person in the outpatient (OP) or Medical Records Department (MRD) of a hospital is responsible for preparing, processing, and managing patient bills and insurance claims, coordinating with other departments to obtain accurate billing information, and maintaining the integrity and security of patient medical records. Their work ensures correct payment flows and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Typical

Accurately preparing and processing patient invoices and insurance claims for outpatient visits and hospital services. Coordinating with healthcare providers and other hospital departments to collect all necessary billing information and documents. Reviewing medical records and documents to ensure providers' services are billed and coded correctly as per standardized protocols (including ICD and CPT codes). Following up on unpaid or denied claims, and working with patients or insurance companies to resolve discrepancies and maximize reimbursement. Managing patient accounts, updating payment records, and reconciling outstanding accounts with finance or accounts teams. Communicating professionally with patients regarding billing inquiries, payment options, or outstanding dues. Maintaining patient medical records in the MRD, ensuring accuracy, security, confidentiality, and accessibility of documentation. Staying updated with billing and insurance regulations, including changes in Medicare, Medi-Cal, and private insurer policies. Using billing and records software for data entry, documentation, and reporting.
Core Skills and Qualifications

Knowledge of medical billing, insurance claim processing, and medical coding (ICD, CPT). Familiarity with medical records management, healthcare regulations, and patient confidentiality practices. Strong problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills. Understanding of billing software and hospital record systems. Educational backgrounds may include a degree or diploma in healthcare administration, finance, or related field, with billing certification preferred.
This role is highly administrative and requires attention to detail, organizational skills, and an ability to interact with patients, practitioners, and insurance companies on billing matters.
