A Bill of Materials (BOM) specialist for the wood industry creates and maintains lists of all raw materials, components, and hardware needed to manufacture wood products, ensuring accuracy by collaborating with design, production, and procurement teams. Key duties include translating designs into BOMs, managing changes and updates, assisting with cost estimation, supporting procurement with material lists, and tracking material usage to minimize waste. A strong understanding of wood materials (like plywood, and laminates), hardware, and finishing supplies is essential, along with proficiency in BOM management .

BOM creation:

Develop detailed BOMs from design drawings and specifications, listing all necessary materials like wood panels, hardware (hinges, screws, handles), and finishing supplies (paint, polish, edge banding).

BOM management:

Update BOMs based on design changes, customer requests, or site variations. Manage engineering change notices (ECNs) to ensure the BOM reflects the most current product structure.

Cross-functional collaboration:

Work closely with engineering, design, procurement, and production teams to ensure BOM accuracy, resolve discrepancies, and ensure that materials are available for production schedules.

Cost and inventory support:

Assist in cost estimation for quotes and budgets based on the BOM. Support procurement by generating material order sheets and tracking material consumption against the BOM to control costs and waste.

System maintenance:

Create, maintain, and update BOMs within the company's ERP or other management software. Ensure BOMs are complete, accurate, and comply with company standards.

Quality assurance:

Audit BOMs for accuracy and completeness, sometimes by reviewing shop drawings and cutting lists before they are finalized for production.
Required skills and qualifications

Experience with BOM management Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and materials, particularly in the wood or furniture industry. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis. Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail. Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications. Problem-solving skills to identify and resolve BOM discrepancies.
