Position Title: Associate Production Editor (UK-Books) Department: Publishing Services, SAGE Location: Publishing Services, SAGE Dehradun office Reports To: PES - Books, Publishing Services, SAGE Dehradun REPORTING In the SAGE India office in Dehradun, you will directly report to the Production Editor Supervisor - Books, Publishing Services and in turn to the Sr. Vice President, Publishing Services [currently Shalini Singh] and/or anyone else designated by her. You will closely work with the production teams based in the Dehradun office, Delhi office and the Head of Editorial Production and Production Editors (PE) in the SAGE UK office. Scope of work

  • Based in the Dehradun office, you will oversee the production of select books from receipt of manuscript files through to delivery of press ready files for print or digital publication.
  • While conforming to SAGE guidelines you will maintain quality, manage excellent author/editor relationships and deliver on costs and timely publications.
  • Work closely with staff in SAGE UK departments, i.e. production, editorial and art/design to ensure books assigned to you are sent to print on time.
  • Work closely with the external agencies i.e. typesetters, freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, etc.
  • Maintain excellent relationship with authors and editors, respond to authors, editors, SAGE internal and external contacts within 24 hours (or less) from the receipt of the email.
  • Updating of own production schedules, as required, in line with the SAGE UK office.
  • Preparing weekly/monthly reports, as needed, or delegated by the PES-Books.
  • Perform work with moderate supervision from PES-Books in SAGE India.
APE (UK Books) job functions and responsibility
  • Has responsibility for all editorial aspects of producing a list of books from transmittal of manuscript file through to delivery press ready files for print or digital publication.
  • Arranges schedules, and estimates and controls costs.
  • Informs and involves authors/editors and PES-Books in decisions which affect the books and on their progress.
  • Allocates books to appropriate typesetters, provides or creates a typographic specification, and controls scheduling, quality and cost in conjunction with department targets.
  • Where required, supplies cover copy to art/design and checks the editorial accuracy of cover artwork.
  • For books in a series, maintains uniformity of internal typography and technicalities of style and liaises with art/design to ensure that series style is applied to the cover.
Productivity standards
  • Manage an average of 15 Handbooks /8500 printed pages/per year. Management reserves the right to review workloads from time to time
Liaison between SAGE and UK Production Editors
  • Always keep your PES informed of your vacation dates, SAGE holidays, and other absenteeism.
  • Communicate in a professional and personable manner with editors and authors on production issues concerning their book.
  • Closely monitor page counts against cast-off and keep the PES informed.
  • Always keep your PES informed of any communication received from editors/authors that is tense or volatile in nature, also, feel free to send any positive words and praise received from editors and authors.
Supportive team member
  • Contribute ideas and provide clear and constructive feedback to peers and vendors.
  • Be available to support peers as needed and as back-up in case of urgent leave and/or vacations.
  • Participate in projects, committees, or task forces as assigned by PES.
Other tasks
  • Update and handover production vacation sheet to your back-up before going on leave.
  • E-file and update your book folders on the shared drive under your own folder hierarchy and take back-up of your files on a periodic basis.
  • When required, you will handle all other tasks not mentioned above as assigned to you by your superiors.
