Job Description

The Assistant Manager - Occupational Safety plays a pivotal role in ensuring regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and cultivating a proactive safety culture across shipbuilding, ship repair, and maritime operations. As part of the Safety & Environment team, this role supports the implementation of robust safety systems and standards to safeguard personnel and optimize operational efficiency in a high-hazard industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities



Functional

Ensure compliance with international, national, and local safety regulations (IMO, OSHA, ILO). Implement SOPs for high-risk shipyard activities including: Hot work (welding, cutting, grinding) Confined space entry Work at height Hazardous material handling Electrical safety Diving operations Heavy lifting and crane operations Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Hazard Identification & Risk Assessments (HIRA). Maintain and analyze records of near-misses, injuries, and incidents; develop corrective actions. Perform regular safety inspections and audits; recommend CAPA. Deliver mandatory safety training and Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) programs. Organize emergency response drills and confined space rescue training. Support implementation of Emergency Response Plans (ERP) for fire, toxic leaks, oil spills, natural disasters, and evacuation protocols. Maintain first aid stations and coordinate on-site medical response. Prepare periodic safety reports for internal and external stakeholders. Report incidents to relevant authorities and maintain compliance documentation. Drive Continuous Improvement Programs (CIP) in safety management. Explore and pilot emerging safety technologies (IoT, AI, wearables). Align safety practices with ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and industry-specific standards.

Monitor safety-related expenditures and ensure adherence to budget allocations.

People & Behavioral



Liaise with fire departments, coast guard, and emergency services. Supervise Safety Officers and Fire Safety teams; coordinate Safety Committees. Collaborate with project teams and contractors to embed safety in daily operations. Conduct contractor safety vetting and ensure compliance with permits and insurance. Represent the shipyard in interactions with regulatory bodies, insurance providers, and community stakeholders. Promote continuous learning through participation in industry forums and training programs.

As per Delegation of Authority (DOA) policy.

Qualifications & Experience



Education

Bachelor/Diploma degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil Engineering or related field. Certifications such as NEBOSH, CSP, OSHA 30-hour, NFPA preferred.
Experience

Minimum 5 years in HSE roles within shipbuilding, heavy engineering, or manufacturing. Proven track record in safety leadership, audits, and process improvement.

Pay: ₹800,000.00 - ₹1,000,000.00 per year
