The Anaesthetist is responsible for delivering safe and effective anaesthesia services to patients undergoing surgical and diagnostic procedures. The role involves pre-operative evaluation, intra-operative management, post-operative care, and pain management, while adhering to hospital policies, clinical protocols, and patient safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Operative Care
Conduct thorough pre-anaesthetic assessments and evaluate patient history, allergies, co-morbidities, and risks.
Explain anaesthetic plans, risks, and obtain informed consent from patients/attendants.
Prepare anaesthesia equipment, monitors, and drugs required for procedures.
2. Intra-Operative Care
Administer general, regional, or local anaesthesia based on surgical requirements.
Monitor patients' vital parameters (airway, breathing, circulation, oxygenation, etc.) during procedures.
Provide life support and resuscitation in case of intra-operative emergencies.
Collaborate with surgeons, nursing staff, and OT technicians to ensure patient safety.
3. Post-Operative Care
Oversee recovery and monitor patients in the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
Manage post-operative complications such as nausea, pain, airway issues, and hemodynamic instability.
Implement pain management protocols for both surgical and non-surgical patients.
4. Critical & Emergency Care
Provide anaesthesia support for emergency surgeries and trauma cases.
Assist in ICU and emergency resuscitation when required.
Participate in code blue, rapid response, and critical care interventions.
5. Training & Quality Assurance
Supervise and train junior doctors, OT staff, and nursing teams in anaesthesia-related protocols.
Participate in audits, morbidity/mortality meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
Stay updated with latest advances in anaesthesiology and pain medicine.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
: MBBS with MD / DNB / Diploma in Anaesthesiology.
: Minimum 3-7 years of post-qualification experience in Anaesthesiology, preferably in a multispecialty hospital.
