The Academic Counselor will be responsible for advising students on course selection, academic planning, career pathways, and personal development. The ideal candidate should have strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of academic programs, and a commitment to student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individual and group academic counseling to students.
Guide students in developing educational plans consistent with their academic and career goals.
Assist students with course selection, registration, and understanding degree requirements.
Monitor and track student progress, identifying those at academic risk and providing necessary interventions.
Support students in navigating academic policies and procedures.
Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and student support services to enhance student success and retention.
Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with institutional and legal guidelines.
Facilitate workshops and informational sessions on academic planning, study skills, and time management.
Refer students to appropriate support services such as tutoring, mental health counseling, or career services.
Participate in orientation programs and contribute to the development of academic advising materials.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or related field (required)
Master's degree in Academic Advising, Counseling, Higher Education, or a related area (preferred)
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic counseling or student advising in an educational setting.
Familiarity with academic advising systems and student information databases (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, Ellucian).
Skills:
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work with a diverse student population.
Problem-solving and conflict-resolution capabilities.
Strong knowledge of academic curricula, degree requirements, and institutional policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with online or hybrid education models.
Certifications in counseling or student advising (e.g., NACADA membership).
Multilingual abilities are a plus.
Work Environment & Conditions:
Office-based with occasional events or student workshops.
May involve some evening or weekend work to accommodate student schedules.
