Key responsibilities
Counseling: Provide individual and group counseling to help students set goals, identify strengths and interests, and develop academic and career plans. Guidance: Assist students with course selection, navigating academic policies, and transitioning to new educational environments, such as from high school to college. Support: Help students cope with academic challenges, stress, and anxiety through coping strategies and ongoing support. Monitoring: Track student progress using grade reports and other tools, and maintain confidential student records. Collaboration: Work with faculty, parents, and administrative teams to ensure student success and provide feedback on teaching practices. Outreach: Organize and conduct workshops, orientation programs, and informational sessions about academic programs and career pathways. Sales (in some roles): For certain positions, this includes converting leads into admissions by explaining the benefits of educational programs and handling objections. Qualifications and skills Education: A bachelor's degree is typically required, with many positions preferring or requiring a master's degree or certification in counseling, education, or a related field. Experience: Previous experience in academic advising, counseling, or a student advisory role is often preferred. Communication: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. Problem-solving: Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities are necessary. Empathy: The ability to listen, empathize, and work with diverse students is crucial for building rapport and trust. Technical skills: Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office and student management systems, is often helpful.
